In the first episode of the One Health Podcast, Dr. Dana Thal talks to Prof. Dr. Fabian Leendertz, founding director of the Helmholtz Institute for One Health and one of the three site managers of the One Health Platform, about the One Health approach in general. What does the approach involve? What opportunities and challenges does it offer for research? What contribution can One Health make to disease prevention?

In this episode, Dr. Magdalena Meyer, PostDoc at the Institute of Evolutionary Ecology and Conservation Genomics at the University of Ulm, gives an insight into her exciting research on the ecology of diseases and the complex interactions between pathogens and their hosts.

The foundation of the One Health Patform is the German Research Platform for Zoonoses, or Zoonoses Platform for short. From 2009 to 2023, an interdisciplinary research community grew up in Germany under the umbrella of the Zoonoses Platform, which promoted zoonoses research in Germany across disciplines and institutions and realized the first networking between human and veterinary research areas. In December 2023, the One Health Platform was founded, which will replace and expand the Zoonoses Platform. More information on the history of the Zoonoses Platform and projects funded under the umbrella of the Zoonoses Platform can be found below.

The health of humans, animals and ecosystems (including the climate) are closely linked. For example, many current threats such as zoonoses (i.e. diseases that can be transmitted between humans and animals), antimicrobial resistance, changes in biodiversity or environmental pollution affect humans, animals and the surrounding environment.

Since the health of animals, humans and the environment does not stop at national borders, but is a global challenge, we would like to support the international networking of scientists in the One Health field.

The Scientific Advisory Board is the central scientific steering committee of the One Health Platform. It represents the One Health Platform externally and manages day-to-day business together with the administrative office. It performs overarching tasks and makes science-related decisions.

In order to give young scientists a voice in the scientific steering committee of the One Health Platform, the Scientific Advisory Board, two places are reserved exclusively for young scientists. The junior representatives are elected annually together with the other SAB members and have the same voting rights as the other elected members.
