Episode 4: The triumph of bird flu
Not only humans can get the flu. Birds can also become infected with influenza viruses, the avian influenza viruses. We are currently experiencing a global spread of the pathogen, which has now also reached a new habitat in the Antarctic. In this episode, Prof. Dr. Timm Harder, Head of the National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, explains what this could mean for endangered bird species and ecosystems. This episode also deals with the significance of infections in mammals for the risk of a new zoonosis developing and the role of humans in the global spread of avian influenza.
